Myth of Empires is a strategy game that’s found itself in hot water. The game received allegations from Snail Games and Studio Wildcard (who worked on Ark: Survival Evolved), claiming that Myth of Empires stole source code from Ark. These allegations were what removed Myth of Empires from Steam, but now it’s fighting a legal battle to re-instate itself.

Earlier this week, Snail Games and Studio Wildcard filed a detailed response saying that Angela Game "has come nowhere close to justifying any relief, in any form," and re-alleging—in much greater detail—what it describes as the "brazen theft of Snail USA and Wildcard's intellectual property."

The filing says evidence presented by Snail Games to bolster its claim—a preliminary analysis found hundreds of class, variable, and function names shared by both games—is incomplete and misleading, and in any event such names "are not copyrightable and are not subject to copyright control."

BattlEye, an anti-cheat system used by Ark, found some suspicious details of their own. When they looked at the source code themselves, they found several strings that should have been unique to Ark. They also found a number of typos, ones that, again, were identical to Ark’s code.

For the time being, the game remains off Steam, but Angela Game is saying they are still developing the title with more content to come as soon as they are able to put it back online. But without an official court decision, that may be several months to a year in the works, if a judge sides with them.
